Horse manure

    I have been up the local stables and bagged up some manure it looks old and doesn't smell I plan to put this on top of the potatoes and around the cabbages after they are planted soon, good idea or not ? My soil is chalky and quite poor

    It would be better dug in prior to planting for maximum benefit.

      I agree with John, dig your potato trench and put a couple of inches of manure in the bottom, seed spuds on top of that and backfill.

        Great that's what I shall do then, I know not to put manure on parsnips and carrots but is it any good for beetroot ?
