Hi Chums. What happens when you take cuttings of roses ? It occurs to me that when you buy a rose, it's always supplied on rootstock, right ? So, if I were to root a cutting, what could I expect ? I was thinking of making a couple of 'standards' using some of my own roses.

I think the two main reasons commercial growers graft rose bushes are these: Firstly, it is more profitable. The rootstock has a well established root system (obviously) so the bush will establish much morequickly than a cutting. Secondly, the rootstock is often selectively bred for disease resistance and to some extent to influence the growth rate of the bush. If I'm right, then I see no problem in taking cuttings from your roses, in fact Alan Titchmarsh did that in one of his programs, and I'm not going to argue horticulture with him:)

Hi clueless1. I too saw that thingy with Titchmarsh. I figured that MAYBE rootstock was important, a bit like with fruit trees that need to be of a certain size to suit individual needs.

I would say that you would end up with cracking plants Freddy. It is the principle method I used on my old garden to creat a hedge of roses. Unfortunately I didn't stick around the house long enough to see the full effect but it all took fine-I used the hardwood cuttings at around November time I think-it was a while ago but it was definitely after summer.
