I was given a hosta and planted it in a large pot, for I gather they are slug-attractants. How can I keep slugs out of the pot? I don't want to use slug pellets. Would putting it in a tray of water help - can slugs swim?
I have the hostas, surprise surprise, for eating. Only the spring leaves I think, when they are still rolled up. I tried some and liked it, though it may not be to everyone's taste! See https://barbaraprice.wordpress.com/2011/05/06/eat-shoots-and-leaves/

You could try adhesive copper bands on the pot these are supposed to give the slugs an electric shock so discouraging them from climbing up the pot.

My next door neighbour has a planter which the slugs used to love - he got a pan scourer (see below) and unravelled it, then tied it in a band around the pot and it works.

Brilliant! I too have an old pan scourer, and I was just wondering whether to go and buy copper tape for just the one pot. Thanks!
