I've 'removed' a rose before now only to have it grow back because I'd left a bit of root in the ground. My first thought was rose as well, especially the way the leaves are 'folded' when they first appear (no experience of ground elder so no idea whether that does the same).

Just thought I would update this thread with my elder/rose issue :heehee:

I've left it alone for the past year and it has taken up its own space in the border ...

        CIMG0005.JPG

... and I have been rewarded with this pretty little thing (and from the buds, plenty more where that came from) ...

        CIMG0018.JPG

The first flower opened yesterday and this picture was taken this morning. It has the most wonderful scent, by far the strongest scented rose I have in the garden!

If anyone is clever enough to be able to name it, that would be fantastic because this one is definitely a keeper! Just hoping it will duel purpose as a cut flower :roses:

Despite not being 100% certain, I'm going to take a stab at this one, as there is something that looks very similar behind my back wall. Thats been identified as rosa rugosa. Having said that, some confuse this one with rosa multiflora.

Thank you Sandy :) I already have two rosa rugosa in my garden and the stems on this one differs completely, so I don't think it is a rugosa.
I'll have to google rosa multiflora

M, can you post a photo of the stems of the rugosa you have please? Something that shows their thorns clearly.

Here goes: first, the stems and thorns of the rugosa roses I already have in my garden (lethal little blighters and no mistake!)

                    CIMG0021.JPG

And these are the stems of the unidentified rose. You may be able to see that some of them are red and the newer ones are green. The thorns are more "traditional" and spaced apart.

                    Does that help?

Its a Dog Rose, rosa canina. So our friend @Sheal was correct.

So yes, the photos did help.
