Clearing a boarder and foun these...

    I'm sure to you non beginners these are simple but I haven't a clue. Chopping back a boarder yesterday and uncovered these. can someone tell me what they are? cheers

    The first one looks like a quince. The stems are the colour of wet slate? With an occasional kick-ass thorn, as my hubby would say (about 1" long, and quite hard, so will go through gloves, and even shoes!). If it is, you will get lovely red flowers in the springtime, with these fruit (often have a dappled appearance) in the autumn.

    Second photo? No idea!!

      Thanks Sian, I've just been back out and you're right, there are some very nasty thorns. one down a few hundred more to identify.

        Second one is Medlar. HenryV111's favourite fruit. They are not edible until they have been 'bletted'. Though when ripe, they can be cooked and the juice used to make Medlar Jelly which I rather like.

            Oooh, you are lucky, I'm just thinking of buying a medlar. They are handsome plants when in a sunny spot and looked after. They have 'textured' crinkled leaves, delicate flowers and form a lovely low crown. I was admiring some in people's gardens in the Loire Valley last year. OK, this photo doesn't capture how nice they are....it was a long dry period when I was there...

            PS the quince is the common flowering quince kind.
