Red Kites have a distinctive fork in their tail. Based in your description I'm tempted to say it was a buzzard, very common here in the midlands...
Nice golden apple snail, used to have one myself. I believe the sale of these has now been prohibited so they will slowly disappear from from the UK.
I have quite an interest in exotic animals, as well as my Tortoises ( see my other thread) I also have snakes, geckos and a selection of bugs....
I saw some today, garish dark blue Phalaenopsis. I thought they had been sprayed blue but whatever, personally I thought they where vile!

That's the one Pete! I've been after it for a hike. I have spent days trying to find seed pods when u have come across it in my holidays but no joy.

I think there are some fairly hardy Slipper Orchids (Cyprepideum) but they can be quite tricky with regards to there soil and moisture requirements.
Interesting. Quite nice to know its not of hybrid origin. I've always liked the yellow flowers more than the pink ones.
