Sal, The Opuntia family are quite difficult to germinate from seed. Try a bit of cold stratification (2 weeks in the fridge). That could help....

Yup, cactus and succulent seeds does germinate quickly. I suppose in the wild, if there is a short wet period, they have to take advantage.

Yup, Seedlings do need shade until they get to a cm or two.
They will grow quite quickly if they are in a decent soil. And while they are growing, don't be shy to water......as long as they are in a well...
