Have a look at the roots. Vine weevil grubs can bring about sudden collapse of plants in containers.
Sounds like galls from gall mites or from sawfly larvae. The sawfly galls are brightly coloured bean shaped galls.
Is it growing in sun or shade? If it isn't sun scorch then it could be a virus disease - especially as it has done the same thing two years...
