For those interested, tonight is the height of the meteor showers. So, at midnight on the 12th of August we will be up on the deck star gazing listening to Richard Burton narrate The War of the Worlds! Saw a few shooting stars last night but hopefully will see some really good ones tonight. [IMG]

There were lots of stars out at 10.30 last night.I should have looked then.

According to my Collins Space watching book,we should be seeing the "Perseids" shower which started July 17th-August 24th.
The peak as you say is tonight and the rate per hour will be 50-100,and they are from the comet Swift-Tuttle.
I had better go to bed now and set my alarm clock.
It is cloudy for us at the moment,so unless it clears we won't see much.
I am going to have to google to get the direction we need to look in.

Hi, Kandy ... almost didn't recognise you there for a moment!

Nice to know there's other star gazers out there. I was going to put some information up but you did it more concisely that I would have!

We had a super night. Went up on the deck around 10 and played Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds ... "at midnight on the twelth of August, a huge mass of luminous gas erupted from Mars and sped towards Earth ..." Brilliant!

It was a clear sky ... the only problem being a near-full moon ... so we had to look backwards over the roof of our house (my avatar) and saw loads of tiny shooting stars but only four or five comet like affairs with long tails .... fantastic! Will go up again tonight to see what's going on.

We then danced to the Scorpions until 1am ... we still dance for no particular reason in the oddest places after 38+ together!

Hi LOL.Glad to hear you had a fantastic showing last night of the display, especially from Mars.I saw from my book that it was low on the Horizon, but I wish I could have been there to share it with you.

When we had the comets over here a few years ago,it was a site I will never forget, and my husband and I would tell everyone we met to look up into the night sky.It was amazing the amount of people that didn't know that they even exsisted. To see the look of wonder on the little ones faces, when we pointed out the "Fuzzy Snowballs" to them.

My only regret is that we were never taught about the stars and planets while at school.but then as my husband pointed out we were too young to understand such things anyway.

Have you seen the rings of Saturn,or Jupiters Moons?another wonderous site.

My hubby was contemplating buying me a Telescope for my Birthday, but there are so many differant ones around it is difficult to get the right one.

I don't know too much about the sort of music you are into but I had a CD by the new Irish all girl group Triniti for my Birthday
The last track,Now we are free is brilliant, although in Hebrew I sing along to it.
It is from the film Gladiator.

Hi new Kandy! It's t'other half who has always been into the star stuff, knows quite a lot. Unfortunately, no we've not seen the rings of Saturn or Jupiter's Moons but would love to!

I like a variety of music. I got Il Divo for my birthday in April. Must admit, I'm a West Life fan, which I know a lot of people will think is sad! I obviously go for the boy bands. [IMG] In saying that, I like Bond ... they are fantastic!

Practicing up on your Hebrew, huh? :D :D

Hi LOL.I like IL Divo also though not a big fan of Classical Music.I must be sad also, because I like West Life,so that makes two of us.
Bond is also cood as is Vanessa Mae on her electric violin.
I also like Enya, which definetly makes me look sad.
John Michelle Jarre...not sure how his name is spelt is also good with his laser harp thingy, though I haven't heard about him lately,so he has probably gone into retirement.

No good with Hebrew,I just sing any old rubbish, though the dog looks funny with her paws on her ears,as I sing. [IMG] [IMG]
