Ziggy has a fireplace to sell, as it reminded me of a situation in our house and not wishing to hi-jack his thread...

When we had new central heating installed, my wife decided that "it would be a good idea" if the old fire/back boiler was replaced by a gas fire.
The fire was "in case the central heating broke down" and "it would come in handy for those cold winter evenings." I reluctantly agreed to this whereupon she decided on an Art Deco inspired marble surround of her own design for it. (Give 'em an inch!) It cost me over £1500.

It's never been turned on except for a safety check in eight years.

I love it when my threads are hijacked:D Its like playing a game of "consequences"

But that was very polite of you DH:thmb:

If your central heating does break down, you will be glad of it. Ours failed & the frost spread in from both sides of the house & met in the middle, killing all the houseplants & bursting all the water pipes.

It seemed a good idea at the time, about 20 years ago I heard about the Ecology building society, they only had one branch & funded green projects. I thought that I might need them at some time in the future so opened a savings account with them, putting any windfall money in there.

When I applied for a mortgage to build this place, they waived loads of fees because I was an existing customer :gnthb: So that one paid off:yho:

    I've a better story,

A friend a builder, built a new house several miles away from their original home which was opposite us, for his wife and family. He did it in his spare time being an area manager of a building company. No effort was spared to make it "just right." It took him two years of week-ends, days off and holidays. On completion she decided she didn't like it and refused to move, so it got sold and they bought and moved to another house "closer to home."

He's nearly finished the extensions and all the alterations, work has been "in progress" for seventeen years.

I really hope she likes it.

You're right about loyalty with some companies. We'd been with the same building society for nearly thirty years, so when I decided to pay up my mortgage when I took early retirement, they waived any charges.

Same with another building society with which I have had an investment bond for many years, (in the wife's name of course for tax purposes). Every time it matures I get offered a good rate for a new one when I ring them up in response to their letters and they'll pay the monthly interest into my bank account. They just have to "have a word with my wife" who always tells them "she's no idea how much it's for 'cos she's only in charge of spending money," but they don't mind. Neither of us have to sign anything, the new bond arrives by return post.
