I would like to grow an upward growing Acer in a cylindrical container measuring 29" high and 11" circumference,in a sheltered position, close to the bricks and mortar of my home.Maximum height 7ft, width 3ft.

I would appreciate your expertise in terms of:-

    1. The viabality of my wishes

    2. The variety of Acer to suit this environment

    3. Care of such a container plant

4.A supplier, ideally within the West Midlands area.

Many Thanks and I look forward to your response.

Japanese maples (I presume you are talking about a Japanese maple, as there are many many acers, some of which are not suited to container growing because of their size)are quite happy grown in pots
They need good drainage to succeed. Fertilise little, as too much fertiliser will result in a 'leggy' plant
    Try Karen Junker (Somerset)
    http://www.junker.co.uk/frames.htm
    or Bodwen (Cornwall)
    http://www.bodwen-nursery.co.uk/
    or Mallet Court (Somerset)
    http://www.malletcourt.co.uk/

They may not be close enough to you, but the websites will give you good information

Normally your local garden centre will carry stocks.

Also remember that they prefer shade and protection from too much wind.
They will also need to be potted in ericaceous compost as they are acid loving plants.

They certainly don't like too much wind, but in Wolverhampton you won't have to worry about too much sunlight :)
Lots of my trees are in what is called 'direct sunlight' without any difficulty. However, in pots, you would need to watch that they don't dry out too much (they need constant moisture, but NOT too wet)
They do indeed prefer a slightly acid soil, but thrive splendidly in neutral soils. Good drainage is more important.

B+Q have had some very nice and quite reasonable sized ones in of late for £29.99.
