wiseoldowl, there are now hundreds of differently named cultivars listed. Even for a real expert on Acers it would be almost impossible to make an accurate id from a pic.

It is Acer palmatum Dissectum Atropurpurea OR a named cultivar. ie a maple with palmate dissected purple leaves

The name does not really matter as long as you like it. It looks a very strong healthy tree, with a weeping habit.

Acer palmatum Crimson Prince is listed in the new book "Japanese Maples" 4th Edition By JDVertree and Peter Gregory. In the chapter ...Cultivars not yet assessed. . Here is says.....

Quote... " This cultivar is very similar in colour to " Bloodgood", but it is said to retain its deep purple -red colour longer into late summer. Spring leaves are bright red,and fall colour is scarlet. It forms an upright tree, reaching 6m(20ft)in height.

Please see post 5. apparently it is one of the new American cultivars.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Silver Surfer Thank you :thmb:the reason I asked for the name was so that I could use it in any other questions I have to ask,as my knowledge of Acer,s is very limited,Now I know the name I can ask my other questions in the Tree forum, thank you for your valuable input and information:)

This is rather interesting. It is the patent for Acer Crimson Prince!

It would appear to be like Acer palmatum Bloodgood, which does not have a dissected leaf.

Quote... "Palmate; deeply incised; doubly serrate; 5 to 7 lobed;"

It never ceases to amaze me what is on www when you start to ferret around!

University of British Columbia forums have a very interesting Maple photo library which you may find fascinating, with many expert Maple growers from all over the world. See....

    Thank you very much ruralgardener.
    I love Acers.
We have many different cultivars, but my knowledge is tiny, when compared to the really knowledgeable folk on the Maple forums on UBC. Many are members of the Maple Society.
