I love that @eddybaby . From the Simon's Cat cartoon if I'm not mistaken.

Just a reminder to any interested forum members to please put a dish or two of water out in the garden in the current warm dry spell. Not just for hedgehogs, but for other wildlife as well .

Haven't looked back on this thread but my 2 hedgehogs always have their own little water bowl just outside their food box. It is currently much appreciated by the small Black miner bees too. The birds have their own supply :)

This post from my local rescue (I have amended it slightly as it refers to photos and a local area).
An interesting point about using lawn treatments etc.

"A little man came in this afternoon , sadly he has chemical burns to his underside and in his leg creases. He has been given a warm bath treatment to help with the pain and infection.
We have removed all the dried infection matted in his fur and will continue to treat topically. He is on pain relief and antibiotics as the burns are open in the leg creases.
This is the second hedgehog with burns to come in, some of you will remember the hedgehog with the infection to his mouth, that was burns. Due to how severe his burns were he had to be euthanised by our vet, hopfully this little man will have a better outcome as the burns are minimal compared to others we have seen.
When the weather is dry they will be needing water to drink and can mistake other things for water, so please ensure any chemicals are kept off the ground and any water that may have become contaminated please replace with fresh water.
For them to be on the underside it is likely to be chemicals we use in lawn treatments, weed killers and other garden work that can cause these burns to hedgehogs."

Here's the hedgehog in his bath. Fingers crossed that he recovers without any ill effects.

Wonder if anyone knows of or could suggest some form of a Humane Hhog "trap" which I could use in my cellar or pantry ?
I have 2 hogs in my garden which have their own food and water supply. The camera doesn't always pick up the 2 together - just on the odd occasion.
Having the occasional trouble with Rats in the pantry I do have Snap Traps in there set with Peanut butter. A few days ago, I found the traps had sprung but no bodies to be seen tho some of the butter had been eaten. Decided to put the trail camera in there and this morning it showed a Hhog strolling about which was the last creature I had expected !! The pantry is open to the steps leading down into the cellar and it looks as if the hog has got into the cellar, climbed the steps and into the pantry. 2 openings to the cellar from outside ( originally an Ale house in the 19th C ). Both covered with mesh but on checking this morning I found a hole in the mesh of one.
With only the 1 camera, I have no idea whether the hog is one of the garden hogs or a 3rd but whichever it is, it would now appear to be trapped in the cellar. My plan is to put food and water down there, along with the camera, and see if I can spot where exactly it is hiding in there ( cellar full of stuff !! ). The next problem is how to catch it safely and return to the garden without spending the night down there on the offchance of spotting it and catching it by hand.
                Any suggestions welcomed.

With temperatures high in the coming days please ensure there is water in the garden for wildlife, hedgehogs are struggling and my local rescue has been getting reports all day of hedgehogs trying to stay cool and hydrated.

They’re coming out day and night at the moment looking for food and water. So please keep bowls topped up and if you have a pond in the garden also keep levels topped up as hedgehogs can fall in when trying to drink from a pond.

PS @Philippa , I've only just seen your post above. Did you have any luck ?

@AnniD Yes thank you. It took almost a week but food and water together with the camera put down in the cellar and hog popping out to eat. Difficult to discern exactly where it was hiding during the day but eventually discovered in the bottom of a sack of Bubblewrap where it had made a comfy bed. Placed in a box of straw and put out that evening close to their "run". Camera showed it meeting up with the other one ( you could almost hear the "Where the hell have you been ? " ) overnight. Mucch relief all round :)

Just a reminder for those of you with ponds to please keep them topped up in this hot weather.
I'm sure you do, but a post from my local rescue would indicate that not everyone does.

"With the hot dry weather as well as providing shallow dishes of water for hoggies and other wildlife, please ensure ponds are topped up so that ways out for hoggies are still available.
Hedgehogs can swim but they need to be able to get out of the pond.
We have had a huge adult male stuck in a pond on Wednesday and a hoglet today.
The adult male was with us for 48 hours and then went home, the little hoglet will be with us until she is big enough to be released.
Both came in complete with pond weed."

I’ve been providing several bowls of water around the garden and the pond has many escape routes. Good advice.

Pleased and delighted to report that I saw a hedgehog last night! Being a bit messy and leaving a pile of twigs and trimmings behind my Acer has now paid off, as he seems to hiding underneath! I’ll be out at dusk again to see if any activity.

I thought you might like to see this photo of 2 hoglets that are being cared for at my local rescue. They have a lot of little ones at the moment, some with their Mum, some without.

                          How lovely @AnniD.
There was a section about hedgehog friendly gardens in GW this week.
Only spotted it going next door so far but will be refilling water etc this week as warm and no rain again.

Pleased to report that my resident pair have 2 young now..........out and about early evening until the small hours.
Got a feeling ( no real evidence ) that the adult which ended up in the cellar/pantry the other week was the female.
                            All well now

I know I keep banging on about it, but with a heat warning in place, at least for the Southern part of the country for now, please keep the water and food bowls coming.

The rescue has 55 hedgehogs in residence at the moment, of which at least 39 are hoglets.

Please keep an eye out for hedgehogs "sunbathing", they are not. They are in distress and need immediate help from your local rescue.

Also watch out for hoglets in the garden, or listen out for them crying for Mum. Again, please get in touch with your local rescue for advice.

                              The hoggies thank you
