I went to the timber merchants today to get 12 3 m lengths of 2x2. When I got there, the lad behind the counter server 2 people before me, and it was obvious to me that he was not very confident in what he was doing. He was asking another member of staff how much this is, where do I find this, to me it seemed like he was new at he job. Anyway when it came to me he quoted me £10.56. The timber was 88p a meter so he had charged me a 3 m length at a meter price instead of multiplying it by 3. I questioned this and he checked it twice and still got £10.56, at this point one of the other staff overheard and got involved. It eventually got worked out correctly and I paid my dues. When I was loading the timber in the car a fella who was behind me came up and said " your too honest mate, I would have given him the tenner and gone" I replied " it quite obvious that the lad was new, and I'd rather given him a chance". The bloke then said " f@@@ him if he can't work out the price that's his problem". My conscience is clear and I feel I did the right thing, but Am I too honest.

    Rusty.

You may well have saved the lad from being shown the door.

You could have saved £20ish by letting him make his mistake, but that's spent in no time, whereas for him it could be his wages and his career ruined for a long time, and his confidence destroyed.

      You did the right thing.

I think you did the right thing. If he was only young it may have been his first job and he is still finding his way. It could have cost him his job and it's hard enough for youngsters these days to find a job in the first place.

Living with a guilty conscience is very hard and I'm always glad if I make an honest choice Rusty and I can tell you are too.
You did right by that young lad...

You did the right thing, when I was a young lad, whenever there was a till difference it was grief, even if it was over rather than under.

You did the right thing. And yes, you're too honest! I doubt he would have been sacked, maybe dressed down a bit but nothing terrible and as it's been pointed out to him at work that will in all likelihood still happen. Sometimes you learn the hard way is all.

Yes, Too Honset, but there is another day, he can learn from the mistake and you don't know were he will be in 10 years time, big discount next time?

Funny thing is, went shopping this morning and there was a lady using those self service tills and for a long time the machine kept saying "please pick up your change" the lady just walked off not picking up her money, so, she was just leaving the shop and me being me, shouted stop don't forget your money! £5 could have been mine:oopss: and all the other shoppers were looking at me and thinking whats going on :snork:

Too honest - no; thoroughly decent - absolutely.

If this was a one-off, and you hadn't been as honest, chances are that the lad would have gotten away with it; however, you never know if he was under some sort of scrutiny or probation, and this error might just have been the straw that broke the camels back.

Besides anything else, I am a great believer that you only get back from this life what you put in - if you are honest and treat others well, then hopefully you should always be treated the same.

I am in two minds here, what you did was honest and comendable, and more than lik,ely what I would have done to a ' youngster'. They are just learning their way in the world, and need all the help and guidance they can absorb.

However, had this been a more experienced individual, I am not sure I would have been so honest. As big store their loss, comes to mind. I have offered to pay by presenting myself at the till ( so not shop lifting (theft) ), if they offer to charge me less than the advertised price, then I am happy to accept, mistake or no.

            I am a bad person (am I)....:dunno:
