ok, I've had this plant for years, it was a small grass like plant and has grown pretty slowly over the years. It is evergreen (this makes me think it is a grass like plant for sure), has 'flowers' well they're like fluffy catkins about 1cm wide and upto 15cm (at the most) long on hard straight stems (they're hard to cut when it's finished flowering for the year), the 'flowers' have seeds on them that are a yellowish colour. The leaves are arched, sharp if you feel the edges and rough on the underside. It's about 3' tall now and I've occasionally gone out there with the shears and clipped it almost down to the ground and it always grows to the same height now. (railings are about 3' 3"tall)
Heres a picture - doesn't show it at it's best but you can see the 'flowers' after they've finished, it was too late in the year for the best picture.

I just know you guys will let me know what it is so I can let my mum know as well, as it was growing in a pot that her bamboo came in so was a freebee plant. If you need a better picture let me know, I'll try to get one with more of the plant in it if needed.

heehee, it stood up well to footballs being dropped on it in my mums garden so when she was getting rid of hers I aquired a lump of it. The kids seem to think that my front garden is a playpark and regularly stand on it, and so far it's not had any damage :)
