Someone once told me that badgers sometimes eat rabbits if they manage to catch them. Is there any truth in this?

They're a protected species that our government likes to shoot.

Ok, anything that will eat a rabbit can't be all bad. There was a badger hole on my land for a while, until the beck rose and washed that piece of ground away.

I must have been about 8 years old, to join the "gang" you had to go down the old badger set as initiation.

I remember dropping down the vertical hole, bits of dirt & tree roots everywhere. I hit the floor in total darkness. It was only then that it went thru my mind "How do they know this is a disused sett?"

In the blind terror that followed, not knowing if I was nose to nose with an angry badger, I somehow found a side tunnel and was back out in what seemed like a second.
