Hi Glen, it was imported and it was in private grounds but the owners said that it is not captive. It stays because it is well fed :) - and most of the land around it is bare volcanic rock.

The second is a Paradise Duck, third, Spur Winged Plover and after the chick, Bullers Gulls and last I think the only NZ parrot, the Kea.

Thanks strongy :), I remember now that it was a Kea. We came across them in a lot of places and they are quite intelligent birds. In one wildlife reserve the Kea was the only bird that could work out how to open a specially designed feeding box. They had to stand on a wooden bar in a certain position before they could raise the lid of the box to get the food.

We saw kiwis on a nightime visit to the reserve but, naturally, couldn't take any photos as no flash was allowed.

I think the baby was a paradise duck as we saw some adults that looked like that one (didn't know what it was until you told me :thumb:) with similar babies.

Absolutely wonderful pics Shiney - I have long had a hankering to visit NZ. The natural beauty of the place , I think, is unsurpassed.

    Thanks for showing us!

I remember a David Attenborough prog back in the 70's (me old?) in NZ, where they were filming Keas and one of them actually undid a nut on one of their Landrovers, showing how incredibly strong they were. Wouldn't want to get bitten by one, might take a finger off!!
