I was given an ornamental cherry blossom tree for my 35th birthday. It's been in the ground for about 4 months and unfortunately a tree fell onto it yesterday (felled by a neighbour!) it broke the top branch off the main trunk. It's not fully broken but is splintered half way across the branch. The care instructions say not to prune and I'm not sure what to do. I'm worried the tree will die or will look unbalanced in the future as its the top branch. The tree is only about 3ft high and is a young plant.

    Any advice gratefully received.

    Thanks in advance.

Do you have any pics of the damage and tree to give members an idea of the situation. I have a Acer Brilliantissismum that I need to prune some of the lower branches off but I won't do that until the sap has stopped moving until November to stop bleeding. If it's the leading branch that has been broken, i.e. the one that would have given it more height, what normally happens is that the tree will throw out more branches and you could use one of those to gain more height and balance. But as you are saying that the branch is splintered and not completely broken off there was a thread on GC not very long ago about a member strapping a branch'trunk up so that it would bind back together, you could try that.:snork:
