Butterfly And Caterpillar Corner

Marvellous Strongy...I've noticed a lot of small Blues up here the last few days but too quick for me to capture

The first of your butterflies (post 345) isn't a Small Tortoiseshell, it's a Painted Lady. I've only seen them a few years ago when thousands of them flooded into UK. Here is a couple of photos from that time





I love that Wall Brown, particularly the underwing pattern. I've never seen one of those.

 

I was thinking that when I first saw it and there was no blue border (but it was a tatty specimen) and assumed it was a Tortoiseshell. I thought it was too early for a Painted Lady, unless it overwintered. Thanks for correcting the ID.

 

A tortoiseshell from yesterday's walk - it was flitting around the nettles like a mad thing! Presumably to lay eggs?

 

Thank you @wiseowl for confirming that, it's pleasing to know I can get some identifications right. I seem to do better with creatures than plants which isn't ideal on a gardening forum.

Woo, i would say its a Small Blue as a Holy blue is bigger in the wingspan, i could be wrong
