parts of my butterfly palm plant seem not to be doing too well.
some leaves are turning brown and falling off.
though some others seem to be fine, fully dark green and firm.

so i am unsure what the problem is.

i have placed it in the living room, north facing so it doesn't get too much direct hot sunlight.

i thoroughly water it once a week. i fill the pot up and then let it soak out. hence the plant does not sit in water.

i do not use any bio feeder.

i leave my house a little on the cool side - heating is not on all the time.

so, can someone tell me what is going on?
is the browning & dying a natural occurrence for this type of plant?
    am i over watering it?
or not giving it enough sunlight and/or feed?

please help as i love this plant and do not want to lose it.

    many thanks.

    Hi

It could be a couple of things, just a old leaf dying off which is normal, the dry ends makes me think its in central heating and this is typical this time of year.

What I would suggest is to cut down on the watering far to much for this time of year and dont feed as it wont be growing , I would only water once the soil has dried out then only a little and that may be 4 or 5 weeks or even longer and it will be quite happy being on the dry side over winter.

How long have you had it for ?

It needs a light room so North facing is not ideal

hi spruce, thanks for the reply.

i've had it for about 6 months.

my house has a through-lounge and there's light coming from the house entrance and side windows. so it should have enough light - albeit all indirect light.

ok, i'll cut back on the watering.

i've read that palm plants need mist / spraying. should i do this?

    thanks.

yes a light spray dont go crazy , also keep out of any draughts , palms are tougher than people think but its usually over watering that rots the roots with most house plants.
