Can anyone id this tree fruit

Hi
I was walking around the estate this morning and was drawn toward this tree that was just visible over a wall, the fruit was still on the tree so I picked one to satisfy my curiosity.

Any ideas,

I'm not sure, but don't eat it unless someone gives a positive id.

 

Agree 100% with Palustris.
Definitely Cornus fruit.
All edible and will do you no harm.

Without seeing leaves, scale etc cannot take it further.
