A few weeks ago my seven year old granddaughter Ava asked: "Pop can you grow lettuce in a pot?" I told her to try it and find out.

She is coming to spend the weekend with us tomorrow and it should be interesting to see her reaction to her experiment. I hope her interest in gardening will continue for life.

Just don't let it dry out, root aphids tend to strike if it does

Our supermarkets sell ones that look like this (can't find pic of one I bought with roots attached), still rooted in some sort of medium, and I assume they're grown hydroponically.

We have grown hydroponically for years, so we have fresh lettuce 365 days a year. Ava planted her plant in soil the same day we built a small aeroponic unit for her to take to her house. She has only seen lettuce grown hydroponically, hence her question about growing in soil. The lettuce in the unit below was planted the same day as she planted her lettuce in soil. We have larger flood and drain units that we use indoors during the winter.
