Can you help identify this shrub ?

Hope I posted in right sub-forum


We have a plant given to us by my m Mother who can’t remember what it is.

It is growing well, shrub, has creamy white flowers in spring.

Can anybody help identify ? …… best guess from my wife is an Azalea …. We need to know so we can prune correctly.

Bottom picture looks like goat willow to me,

Salix caprea

I can see some different leaves in the first picture.

 

Is there a way to confirm?

But I think you may well have two plants in that pot, the original, plus an interloper, which has seeded its self along side your actual plant.

 

There is only one plant in there (can photo again if need be)

Wife checked the suggestion above ... not that, as no 'catkins'.

 

Any chance of a better picture, bigger, of the whole plant?

If you look above the Iris flower on this pic you'll see some leaves very much like yours. This is our Salix " Kilmarnock" .

Don't be put off by the lack of Pussy Willows ( as we know the "catkins " as ) , ours is around three years old and hasn't produces any yet.

2 pics of shrub below ..... flowers nothing like those .... they were small creamy white flowers.

 

Wife advises flowers look something like this:
Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Ballerina' | Buy Juneberry Trees

 

If it is an Amelanchier ... there would be evidence of small black berries where those small, white, flowers once were. Admittedly, blackbirds would strip the plant clean of any berries at first sighting but as we are experiencing a somewhat dry "summer", I would expect to see a fruit or three still clinging for dear life on your shrub? Certainly mine have.

 

Did not mean it was Amelanchier ... just using that as an example of flower shape .... and it has no berries

 

If there are not two different plants growing in that pot, I should have gone to specsavers.

You can even see the two separate stems in pic one clearly, the leaves of the taller plant are totally different to the shorter one.

Well it came as 2 stems joined together into one ... if it is 2 plants then ... my question splits identifying 2 plants.
So we know how and when to prune.

Can confirm no berries originally or residual.

My mother cannot remember what it is.
