Carrot 'Royal Chantenay'

i bought some of these today t&m brand. now i was wondering how i can grow some for seeds. any advise would be really appreciated.

I really would not bother, These are biennials so they need to be in the ground for two years. The seed is not really worth collecting as sometimes they dont grow very well. By law carrots have to have a 65% germination rate so I would just by fresh seed you may get better results, yes I know the seed from packets is from carrots grown for seed but these are usually just that,

 

You'll need to rogue out/dig up the roots in autumn, store over winter, re-plant in Spring and protect against pollination from other cultivated/wild carrots.

I don't bother with carrot seed saving, but in my books on the subject it'll have the number of roots required you need to save for re-planting.

 

i think i'll give this one a miss then lol. didnt realise carrots where such a task for seeds.

 

There are so many wild carrots in some parts of the UK that you could "undo" a few thousand years of selective breeding in a season & end up with a tiny thin root again.

The wild parsnip has a similar, not worth bothering about root, but someone did manage to breed a decent size root from them in 10 seasons.
