I've seen a paddling pool/ sand pit for 15 quid that just happens to be about the right size for the pond at the end of our planned water feature.

For a similar size round actual pond, I'm looking at upwards of 60 quid.

Is there any legitimate reason why I can't use the cheapo paddling pool option? It would be sunk flush with the ground. I only need it for its water holding properties.

Exactly....not much use if the plastic degrades after a couple of years and you have to start again. By far the best option for pond creation is EPDM liner draped over old carpet or felt liner. It's UV resistant, damage resistant and a neutral colour. Loads of internet suppliers sell it in varying thicknesses, as do garden centres, I think.

But my eldest son had a plastic sand pit that was permanently exposed to the elements for 10 years. We only chucked it because a cast iron drain pipe fell from the roof and cracked it.

Isn't it the wrong way round? Shouldn't the water be on the outside?

All jokes aside, I saw that on Facebook the other day. It's awesome, as is the story behind it.
