I am not at all sure about this borrowers, but how about a Ctenanthe oppenheimiana Tricolor or "Never Never plant".. Try googling the name & see what you get.. I found this link.. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/95480.html
Thanks again Marley, that picture could be mine! However, when i was looking around (on net) for this i also came across this name, & the pic looked the same again... Stromanthe sanguinea "Tri Color" What do you think? Can only see 'tri color' in common. Thanks cheers
Ooh yes borrowers, that the Stromanthe Trio does look more like it I agree... Maybe Strongy, Pete or somebody can a more positive ID, but I think you have it there. The creamy white markings are much more like yours I think...
Take your pick, it is marketed with both names Ctenanthe being the older name although they usally all come from Holland. This is one of the Calathea family I said was now more popular than the Maranta. There has been a lot of plant breeding of this species and genetic tinkering so there are many cultivars now. It is a striking plant, just make sure it isn't in direct sun as the whiter parts of the leaf can scorch and turn brown. It does sometimes flower in the home with a cluster of small red bracts.
Yes one of the many Calathea there are many cultivars about as strongy says they like a moist atmospere to stop the browning of the leaf tips,I stand my pot in a large cashpot filled with gravel with water in,I also take it in the shower room when having a shower so the steam can help stop the foliage drying out.
Thank you all for your replies. This plant isn't in direct sunlight now, in fact in an alcove. Walnut, we don't have a shower room so can't do that with it  I've never even misted both plants (the Mantara & this one), so as i say lucky to have them going strong. Marley, how do you ever know which one you've got? I was sure that first pic was mine & only by chance i came across the other pic which looked like mine too  Strongy, how come the first pic i put on is Maranta? Not disagreeing just that i bought both plants together. love to think that i have a 'hard to deal with' plant. More luck that it has survived. Thank you all. cheers
Strongy, how come the first pic i put on is Maranta? Sorry B don't understand the question.
strongy, not you - me. I don't know what i meant to say  I don't have senior moments, just seniors days. what a wally :D
