Does anyone use either: copper fungicide or chestnut compound for the prevention of damping off of seedlings?

I didn't last year because I hadn't heard about it but have bought some copper fungicide today as reccomended by Chilterns advice on seed growing. They also reccomend using Levingtons soil less compost as apposed to J Innes for better results.

I'll give them both a try this weekend when I sew my seeds. :D

Yes I use it too. Don't buy a tin, rather buy a packet that has several smaller sealed packets inside it. The reason is that it needs to be reasonably fresh. I tend to spray my seedlings quite regularly.

On a closely related subject, did anyone see the news that the NHS was going to replace some of its stainless steel fittings with copper ones. Apparently Ecolli lives up to 4 days on stainless steel but only 45 minutes on copper.

    Cheshunt compound, Approximately:

    Copper (II) Sulphate, pentahydrate 15%

    Ammonium Carbonate 83%

Don't know what the other 2% is - probably a wetting agent.

Lethal to fish and other pond life so avoid any contamination and dispose of carefully.
