Do I need to add anything to the soil?

    Good Afternoon Lovely Gardners!

I am slowly clearing three year of neglect from little garden and now one side is clear I want to start sewing my wild flowers seeds (I am a tad late with a couple of the packets, but hopefully they will be OK :fingers crossed:).

The earth looks very grey and dry and there are lots of small stones. I live on part of a working farm and our houses were built about 20 years ago. Where mine and my neighbours houses are was apparently the old farm yard, so I have a feeling there probably isn't that much depth to the soil either.

I bought some 'Garden Soil' to make the herb garden which is in a concrete basin I can't move and wondered if I should get some more and try to mix it in with the soil, once I have removed the small stones of course?

I know wild flowers grow anywhere, but just wondered if the ground needed feeding like plants in pots do?

Many thanks as always, any guidance would be most gratefully received. :ThankYou:

    Lynne

      Hi Lynne,

Just sow the seed and a light rake over , they will do the rest and no feeding will be fine as not required on this occasion with wild flowers.

Hi Spruce, that's great, many thanks.

If I want to plant some other plants on the other side of the garden when I clear it, like a Clematis, should I do anything to the soil for that please?

is the soil orid if yes , manure if you can or good load of compost and put some fish blood and bone in the the bottom and give it a good mix with fork, a good square meter if you can , even to loosen it up will help, what variety of clematis was you thinking off as so many here grow them they may suggest a good variety for a awkward spot if you ask.

          Right plant right place.

          Spruce

For the plants other than the wildflowers, I would suggest adding a good quantity of multi-purpose compost

              Many thanks both, really helpful.

I hadn't thought about what type of Clematis :doh:I have loads of Clematis flowers in my at the moment, they are lovely pale pink, but they are from my neighbour's garden, so I suppose I should ask her what that is and buy the same one if it grows well?

I have had to stop clearing down that side of the garden, as I had a 'Robin' Mum and Dad shouting at me this afternoon as I started clearing the huge overhang from next door (not the Clematis I was going to leave that for the moment anyway as it is so beautiful) so suspect there is a nest in there somewhere. But I have cleared half and once I dig the ground over, I thought it would be nice to have a Clematis of my own, rather than 'borrowing' my neigbhours :roflol:

To be honest Clematis is one of the very few plants I know by sight, Wisteria and Passion Flower being the other two, both of which are already established in the garden, so I thought it would be nice to add another gentle blossom :spinning:

Thanks again both, getting there......slowly :snork:

WOW lovely Spruce, yes that's them, but they are all one colour, the pale pink rather than the deeper colour. Just cascading over the fence, stunning!

With the Wisteria out at the moment as well, it almost feels like a normal garden....well sort of ;)
