A job has been advertised in my company today, in a role that is a natural progression up the ladder to my existing role; in truth, I am already doing many of the things that are in the job description, and don't think that the new role would stretch me too much further. However, my current workload goes between massive and ludicrous, so I am worried about biting more off than I can chew; I am also a bit concerned about going for a new job with the jobs market the way it is now (its one of these roles that once you move up, there is no turning back, and in the event that there are redundancies it could possibly be one of the least stable); and finally, I am concerned that I would be wasting my time, and insulting the intelligence of my employers by applying as I have childcare commitments that require me to finish at 3pm on a weekday (although I could still go back to work in an evening or on a night, and weekends are not a problem)

So, what do you reckon ladies and gents - a bridge too far, or worth a shot?

If you want it, go for it. Don't worry about 'what ifs'. I resigned from my last job without even having secured an alternative. Reckless I know, but sometimes in life we just have to take a leap of faith or else we get bored and stagnate. I'm not saying you're at the bored and stagnating stage, but you're thinking about going for it, and that alone is an indication that you should.

So worst case scenario, at some point down the line you get made redundant. I've been through redundancy, and I've been through a company collapse, and then most recently, a leap of faith. If there's one thing I've learned from that its that as long as you're determined, you'll be alright. It sounds to me like you're committed to your work, and your employers recognise that. That makes you very employable. Perhaps more so than many of your peers.

If you really want the job then go for it FC, but if you read your post again, a lot of your comments are on the negative side, so perhaps you should sit down and right a list of pro's and con's before your final decision. :)

What's the crock of gold worth FC? May put more pressure on your home/ family life?
The thing that would have driven me was the chance to get on the property ladder. Owning your own bricks and mortar is still the best way to go I reckon,
good luck if you do go for it...:blue thumb:

Go for it. A employee able to be creative, and flexiable in balancing his/her home committements and job committements is a good thing. Both transfer over to other aspects of a good employee. And if the quality and timeliness of the projects/tasks are not compromised I as a manager would be delighted.

              Thanks all :)

There is the potential for a not too shabby increase in salary, which may be the key to us finally getting onto the property ladder; over the past 12-18 months we have cleared a lot of debt, and are continuing to do so until we reach zero, and then hopefully we can get some way toward buying a home even if it is part-ownership.

The role is simply a 'senior' position within my own grade, and certainly as far as my boss is concerned, I am in the upper half of the performance table of all those in my grade, so that, coupled with the projects that I have tackled (and succeeded at) over the past few years, will hopefully see me stack up as at least a short-list choice.

              I do worry that it would have an impact on my home life, however on the other hand I am unsure if that would be any different, as I spend many an hour working at home as it is (there aren't all that many waken ones left!);

The closing date is the end of next week, so I am going to mull it over during the weekend and see how I feel on Monday. Part of me thinks I have nothing to lose.

With David Cameron working on banks/mortgages at the moment that could help you out as well FC. :)

Would it upset your management if you applied for the job and if offered it make your final decision whether to take it then?

It wouldn't upset them as such, but it would be frowned upon and may even make it harder to progress in future - there are only 6 people in my current grade, and one in the grade above (which they want to make two); essentially, if I got the job, I would be partly responsible for around 1000 staff, so you can see why I am not jumping into it lightly.

That, and the fact that I am one of those people that throws 100% into everything I do - I don't 'do' half jobs.

I can see your point, my suggestion wasn't exactly etiquette especially for such a responsible position. Obviously your better half will have her say too, so a weekends thinking is probably the best way to go. Good luck with whatever you decide. :)

When it comes to these tricky decisions which life sometimes presents us with, the best advice I can offer is to follow your instincts.

Many years ago, I accepted a promotion to a post which I wasn't really sure was right for me.
I was right. Several years of purgatory followed, before I got out and went back to doing a job I enjoyed.

Similarly, I am perfectly happy in my current job. When I started, it meant leaving somewhere I'd worked for 26 years and taking something of a leap into the unknown. However, it simply felt like the right thing to do.

What's your gut feeling on this FC? What are your instincts telling you to do?

If your instinct is to go for the promotion, if it feels like the right thing to do, then go for it.
If you find yourself endlessly wondering and prevaricating then maybe it isn't the right move.

At the moment, my gut says that the job spec is written for me; I have no qualms that I would have the ability for the role either - the vast majority of the role I am doing already, and have been for a while; equally, the added responsibility does not worry me, as I generally have more responsibility than my peers at other locations at the moment anyway; and I certainly have no qualms about an increase in salary :snork:

My main concerns are the potential increase in workload (although there is the possibility for me to have a couple of deputies to assist), and my issue of childcare in the afternoons -- how much that would affect the role, I don't know - its probably more of an issue on paper than it actually would be in reality if you follow my meaning?

Colleagues in my own grade, and some of my current staff team (those who know that the job is going) have given encouragement so far, as has my boss - however, they are all people who know me well, and that will almost certainly not count for anything at interview stage.

You must know that that's not really true:)

Your gaffers and their gaffers will know that the right person to act as a leader is the person that already has the support of his/her peers and those that will be under his/her command. It just makes for an easier life for all. I've had good managers and bad managers over the years. The good ones don't have to work that hard, because people actually want to do right by them. The bad ones (or the mediocre ones) constantly have to prove themselves or wave the stick.

I've had leadership roles over the years (although I usually opt out of them if I realise what's happening:) ), and I know it just works out right if your team see you as a natural leader. I've never had to pull rank or wave a stick, and that has meant that my gaffers get a quiet life.

You sound like someone who just gets on with things, and with whom people get on with. That makes you ideal from a management perspective. The question is, do your gaffers get you to do it knowing you'll do it right, or do they take the risk of giving it to someone they hardly know, based purely on the hour or so's discussion in an interview?

The fly in the ointment is that the interview will almost definitely be done by senior managers from other locations (and senior HR staff) who don't know me, and who will almost certainly want 'their guy' to get the role, so a hell of a lot of it will come down to the actual interview.

Still, its not so much the interview that is worrying me - if I don't get the job, then that is fair play - and maybe the opinion might be that someone from outwith the company might be better (fresh pair of eyes and all that); I suppose I will never know unless I try........
