I popped into our village One Stop shop with Mr Kandy late this afternoon as I needed to get some stamps as I had run out and forgot to get some when i went to the PO to post some mail that needs to go to Europe..

Anyway,we ended up buying several more items and I asked for the book of stamps {12}which the assistant added to the till value of the items which altogether came to around £12.86p.I paid cash for the goods which had been put into one of the shops carrier bags and off we went home.I put the items away but hadn't missed the fact that there was no book of stamps until a little while ago when i needed them to put on to some envelopes I had written out.I searched everywhere,{in the bottom of the carrier bag and my purse}and there was no sign of the stamps.I got my coat on and drove back down to the shop where I explained everything to a different assistant on the tills as the one who served me this afternoon had gone home. She asked me if I had paid for the goods with a credit card and did I have a receipt and I said no as I had paid cash and us customers are never given a receipt

This lady said she would have to go and ask someone as to what she was to do so I waited until she came back. When she came back to the till she informed me that as I didn't have a till receipt then there is nothing they can do without a reciept and if I would like to come back when "Sarah" is back on the till then she might be able to remember serving me.

I am fuming as I know it is only £4.32 and not an awful lot to lose but this is the second time in a month this same woman has charged me the wrong price for goods, but luckily Mr Kandy was watching the till and told her what she had done wrong:mad:

Is this a scam that goes on in supermarkets{not giving out receipts}and charging people the wrong prices to make their wages up or something?I stopped going in there after the last time and only popped in this time to get the stamps rather than driving all the way back down to the next village to the PO.

Is it worth letting someone know what is going on at Tescos head office as I am probably not the only one in the village who is getting ripped off by these shops....

    Rant over:mad:

I bought a book of Stamps & promptly left them on the till, luckly they were still waiting for me when I went back.

Its more likely incompetence than pre meditated fraud.

When i'm queing with just a few items, I add them up & get the exact money together. Most cashiers look increduless when you give them the right amount.

Sorry to hear what happened :(.

It's almost certainly mistakes due to carelessness in stores when they make errors of this sort. If the money is rung up on the till then the staff can't be intentionally fiddling you as they have to make sure that the money handed over is equal to the total on the till.

You should always ask for a receipt. This is where it helps if you pay by credit card as they must give you your copy of the credit card receipt. I always check that the itemised receipt is what I have got in my bags and always pack my bags myself.

The checkout girls have got a tedious job and I'm never surprised that they make mistakes. In most supermarkets they are checked on how many items they process per hour and if it's too few (compared to the number of customers) they can get into trouble. So they tend to be a bit rushed and make mistakes.

Kandy, I here what you are saying, but I don't think you are as you put it "being ripped off"
Its your responsibility to check what you have before you leave the store, once you have left, you do need a receipt. Receipts are often declined so most small shops don't give them unless you ask.

As an aside, I used to think small shops were "overcharging" compared to supermarkets, it was then pointed out to me, buying power. Little shops have to pay what ever the wholesaler is charging, big supermarkets buy things buy the umpteen lorry load, so they get it for even less. We should all try and support small shops by spending money there, not saying they are "ripping people off"

I know its annoying when things like this happen, and I have no doubt at all that there are some cases of dishonesty. However I believe that in the majority of cases it is just human error on the assistant's part.

It does go both ways. Sometimes shop assistants make mistakes and under charge. When it's happened to me I've confessed if I notice (which I usually do), but I must admit there have been times when I haven't realised until hours later when I discover I have more money left in my pocket than I can account for.

Before our local butcher's shop closed down, I used to go in every saturday morning and get £2 worth of sausages. One time, I saw the lady placing more and more sausages onto the scales until there must have been about a stone of the things on there, before she turned to me and said £2.12 ok? I joked that that would the bargain of a lifetime, if it was correct, but that I think there might be a problem with the scales. After a bit of tinkering she removed almost all the sausages and I came out with roughly the usual amount for the usual price.

Well although it is going to cost you in fuel and time ie more than your loss

I would go back and see "Sarah" when she is on, like tomorrow before she forgets, and ask
Possibly a genuine mistake to ring it through but forget to take the stamps out of the draw, she may say oh sorry, or a check would show they had more stamps in stock than cash taken

If it is a common occurance (not as you do not usually go there) then I would call the main store and mention it to a manager

Having said that, I am old, and today made a DRASTIC mistake, I have an excuse though not allowed to use it in defence
Basically he failed security, so I am not allowed to issue him a claim, but I have to take him through elegibility to make a claim before he has to travel to the next town to prove his identity
Unfortuanatey for me this took 25 minutes and by the end I had forgotten he had failed security at the beginning and issued the claim form

His friend called intially and I advised I had to get his friend through security before I could discuss it
He (56 and distraught could not remember passwords on his account)

Taking him through additional security there was no questions I could check as he had lived at the same address since birth
He was trying to make a claim for two children
During the checks it turned out his wife had died in an accident and he was left with the kids, the date of death he told me, and the names of the kids, where he worked etc, AND WE should have sent him a new claim form when it was reported two months ago
Forgetting by then he had failed security, and the story, My heart ruled my head and to save him a 70mile round trip, I advised I had sent him a new form, send it back and we would get him payments

DUH someone was listening and shopped me
I now face my third disiplinary dismissal offence, Only five months to retirement, I could go off sick on full pay for six months but that is NOT me

(I must admit though, we do have scum, who read the death columns and chance their arm to make a scam claim hoping the usually male partner does not know about child claims) I foolishly lowered my Guard

        Ooops woe is me
        Back On topic
Maybe "Sarah" is old like me and forgot, or needed the stamps for her Xmas cards who knows

Go back check for peace of mind or find the book of stamps in your secure pocket saved so you do not lose them :-)
