i would be happy and love to pay a couple of quid into the pot each month as i think this is a fab site, Friendly and informative, I even like the Admins :snork:

however i suffer from a really serious problem i have really short arms and very deep pockets :lunapic 130165696578242 5::lunapic 130165696578242 5::lunapic 130165696578242 5:

seriously i would but i have a terrible memory and i know i would forget, if people paid annually then you have loads one months then nothing until someone does another prompt like has been done on this occasion a monthly subs would be great for me personally

No, Ziggy, it's because of all the abuse we give CK.........and all the abuse she gives us!!!

That's why I believe we should keep it an open forum where people donate or subscribe voluntarily because they enjoy GC and the people on it. We had a tremendous response this month, and we are extremely grateful for that, but we can't expect that in the future. So members should be able to donate/subscribe when they want to and can afford to, not disappearing because they feel guilty or pressurised to donate when they can't afford it.:coffee:

That's a very well worded paragraph :dbgrtmb: but I think we need to add that "even if you do have some spare cash you needn't feel guilty about not subscribing". The definition of spare cash is different to everyone.

The whole ethos of GC is that it's for the members and none of us want to see that change. I'm sure that Nathan will now be receiving sufficient funds (as Dave suggests) to keep GC running in the way he has developed it and there won't be a necessity to introduce any other method. Particularly as it's now possible to donate by cheque if you don't wish to use PayPal.

An occasional reminder by one of the members that it's possible to help towards the cost of running GC can always boost the donations. That should be sufficient.

:oopss: i will openly admit that this is the first time i have even thought about the cost of the site, i did buy a few mags (not that sort Ziggy,Mandi) but was fed up with not finding half the info that i needed or wanted and being bored silly with info i either knew or didnt blinking want !! but here i usually found /got my answers quickly and have had many a laugh along the way so i have put a few coffers in the pot and would/shall willingly do so again, for me in furture shall do it 6monthly once in march and again in sept have now set up reminders on laptop and phone,
cheers :ccheers: No ziggy /mandi that is not an idea for the donations lol :grphg:

I am with Pete with his suggestions and feel that no matter how often you visit a site, say £10 per annum, is not a lot to ask of everyone who is a member. it is then up to them how much value they get for their £10. I think £10 per annum is as cheap as chips and not many people who can afford a pc cannot afford £10 in subs for a site of this calibre. This would ensure that you have the necessary funds to maintain the site to the standard we as members have come to expect. I was prepared to donate £20 but of course instead of £20 they took $20 dollars which is only £12.80. I am happy to pay that amount again in a years time but I don't want to feel guilty if you start asking for more funds in 6 months time because the coffers are empty and work needs doing. Right that is my opinion and I will say no more but I am sure I am not alone in these sentiments.:)

I have a bit of a problem with an annual subscription. If I had been told when I joined GC that there would be an anual sub, I probably wouldn't have bothered. It's only when you realise how good the site is that you become prepared to donate. So I prefer a donation to a subscription.

This also leaves it up to the individual, which I think is more in keeping with the ethos of the forum.

I can actually see everyone's point of view and they all have good reasoning behind them......with no banging of drums etc.

But, for me, what makes GC special is the differences in points of view of all members which instead of separating us actually binds us all into a special place where we able to swap info, advice, jokes, sympathy, and friendship. GC is an open door to all who want to come and enjoy it, gain and give gardening advice etc and that open door allows people contemplating joining us to do just that without worrying about a financial bar, however low, to jump. Later on, when they realise the value of the site people do, like us, contemplate donating and/or subscribing.
I've been trying to think of an analogy with regard to introducing "on entry" subscriptions and this is the best I can do. When I was a kid the street I lived in was a micro society of very warm, open people. Neighbours would help out when others were ill or in trouble, borrowing food and tea when they ran short and always repaying it back. But that could not have happened but for one thing.....an open door. Every house in that street left their front door open, you could walk in and there would be a kettle on the stove and a smile for you. If we hadn't had those open doors in every house, and just closed doors or had to "pay" on entry, the Street would not have been the close, warm, caring society that it was. To me Gardeners Corner is that Street again.
Shiney, in my opinion is right in saying that new members might be put off joining on finding that they have to pay to enter. Let people come in, "walk" around, chat with other members, enjoy the warmth and spirit of GC without being pressured to donate or subscribe. I think, like Shiney, I might have had second thoughts about joining GC if I had to pay before I joined, whether I could afford it or not.....and look what I would have missed.!:snork:

ARMANDII, your analogy has convinced me and that Shiney always knows best, he's a sage.:goodpost: Just hope that this overwhelming support for donations that has occurred now will peter out into regular donation giving sufficient for the sites needs.:)

I am sorry I have caused so much unrest amongst members

I had no intention of doing so,
Yes I want it to remain an open and free site,
I just though a gentle nudge would make those who could afford it donate a little, not put those who could not afford it to be put off and leave, That was NOT my intention

I realise that there are lots of people who seek advice to grow their own veg etc to eek out a living, I hope and know that advice is still freely given

Running a couple of sites myself I also realise that it costs money, so even a pound from a member helps, though in my case not really wanted, as I do it for my own satisfaction as most probably this site owner does

I had no intention of chasing members away, and sorry if this has caused members to feel that way
I just did not think ahead of the outcome

                                Sorry
