"Donations" to site upkeep?

    Jack, your intention was obviously well meant and I think it was taken in that light. :dbgrtmb: Everyone was just giving an opinion.

    Like you, Nathan has always said he didn't want money towards the running of the forum but the forum - and the costs - have grown more than he thought. So I'm sure he appreciates the occasional small donation - but doesn't need much so members needn't feel pressured in any way.

    It took over five years for me to get him to accept a cheque :heehee:. As we have now donated almost enough for next month as well, I think it has all turned out for the best :dbgrtmb:

      Jack, there is no need to apologise, you haven't chased members away as far as I can see, it's just been a healthy debate with a good outcome now that Nathan has a little bit more cash coming in to help pay for the site.

        As John Wayne used to say, Jack, "never say sorry, just get it done", so like everyone else I believe there's no need for you to apologise for anything.

        If fact, I personally, would like to THANK YOU for broaching the subject and your obviously strong feelings about GC and the need to support it.:thumbsup: It allowed everyone to contribute their thoughts and ideas in an open forum where the subject of donation and subscription could be discussed.
        A lot of sites would take such decisions behind the scenes and not included the members in the discussion of policies, which is why GC is so different and shows that micro society of warmness and openness that I was talking about. So I think you're mistaken in thinking that you caused "unrest", what you did do was a favour and good turn to GC and all it's members. Thank you, Jack!:snork:

                  I'd just like to chip in here: Nathan never said as much, but he's always been rather proud that GC had very little advertising and no sponsorship. It can become an "iron hand in a velvet glove" if you're not careful. So for years, Nathan has very generously funded this forum out of his own pocket with almost no support from anywhere. But he never commented about that, much less complained.For that, Nathan, you are a total star!

                  So we talked him into having thixcd s donation feature and it has proved a great success. Thanks to all of you who have donated so generously. It has been a success beyond our dreams! And considering he faced an outright rebellion from the mods when the site was moved to (a free) MyBB, resulting in it having to be moved back vBulletin, he did that without so much as a murmur! So we mods are doubly grateful for his generosity and strong leadership. :love30:

                  But to those who feel neither inclined or able to donate, please don't worry. This is and always will be a free forum and we appreciate all our members regardless!

                      The only downside is that the minimum that Paypal allows as a donate amount is £5, the good side is that we are back in £'s

                          It is thanks to our membership that GC goes from strength to strength, if it were to go stale, I am sure our passion for the site would also wane.
