The weather conditions around here are atrocious and I believe it is snowy in many areas and frosty in others.
When the ground is covered in snow or hard with frost it's hard for many birds to find food.
PLEASE put something out for the birds.
Even if you have hanging feeders please remember many birds are ground feeders and put something out on the ground.
You're likely to be rewarded by seeing birds in your garden that you don't usually see there.

There's a huge gang of long tailed tits going about here. Their little twittering noises attracted my attention. Sorry no pics.

What are you seeing in the garden.

I've seen a woodpecker (not sure if it was lesser or great spotted) on my feeder for the first time this week, along with the usual great tit gang and a robin.

I've stopped putting food on the ground because we had problems with crows taking over and scaring off all the others, apart from the wood pigeons that don't seem the slightest bit bothered by anything.

We get a few Ring Tailed parakeets around here (they have naturalised in Surrey), they are quite common and sometimes very noisy, more so in the summer. If you're not expecting them its quite a surprise especially if a flock of them suddenly appear.

Have just built a new bird table in the West Bay plot. Put bread & apples on it. Will check in the morning, as they hadn't found it this afternoon.

I'd like to mention that they need liquid water too. A drinking bowl & a dish to have a wash in.

I know its a pain when it keeps freezing, but the birds appreciate it.

Last winter, the birds were so hungry in the snow, they were pecking the chewing gum from the tarmac in Tescos car park

For ground feeding, don't put the food out in the open. Yes, it does attract gulls, crows etc. I put it under the shrubs where the Dunnocks, wrens etc hop about and the sky flyers can't see it.

You're right there, I would have charged them for chewing gum & graffiti removal.

We have the same problem with the rooks and jackdaws taking all the seed - they even dangle about on the peanut feeders which is interesting to see but small birds keep well away.

We also have dunnocks/tits and robins as well as jays and woodpeckers who all seem to enjoy peanuts..........

A robin came really close to the window while I was preparing my lunch and I felt so guilty! So I cut up some bread and put it on a tray and pushed it out where it could be seen. But only minutes later it started to snow and in no time it was a tray of snow! I can't get out because I don't have boots and the snow is about 10" all round the house! Any suggestions?

Wear good gardening shoes. Then step into a carrier bag, one on each foot :hehe:, string through the handles and tie them up. Then walk very carefully taking very small steps and using a walking stick if possible.

At the first opportunity buy some wellies with heavy cleats. :D

Along with the usual stuff, I've been putting out a dish of sultanas, which seems to be particularly popular with blackbirds and starlings.

Our bird feeder is getting very heavy use. there are so many birds on it that they also provide food for the ground feeders by dropping quite a lot.

We have a whole variety of tits and finches, robins (five of them), woodpeckers, collared doves, pigeons, pheasants etc :gnthb:

:hehe: Thanks shiney! Neat but what I actually wanted advice on was how to feed the birds when it keeps getting covered with snow!

I actually can't get any wellies to fit because the arch of my foot and ankle are too big! Despite extensive searching over the years, I've yet to find a boot I can actually get my foot in!

Plus I'd never do the thing with plastic bags - very risky. And I have a knee replacement - falling over is not an option as I haven't yet learned to get myself up with it.

    I know, I know - I'm just a big chicken! :hehe:
