I sowed some lettuce in pots - I always get far too many, and too many all-at-once, if I sow a drill. So I do half a dozen of each of three varieties once a month.

Anyway, I pricked them out two to a 90cm 90mm pot, and never got around to thinning the "weaker" one. Planted them out earlier this week and culled the weaker one, so I had 18 lettuce "seedlings" (about 5 or 6 leaves each), popped them in a mug with a bit of water in the bottom as the plants still have some roots where I extracted them from the pot, and they have been providing nice salad for the week.

Not sure if its a good idea, but there seemed to be enough room in the pot for both plants.

Interesting idea. Did the culled ones keep growing in the mug?

I'm not metrically minded but in imperial I think thats getting on for a yard!

"Did the culled ones keep growing in the mug"

Are you calling me a mug? :D Too late to tell now I'm afraid!

We've bought hydroponic lettuce from supermarket in the past, they last a while. They are in a cube of rockwool, and will survive on a little water in an ornamental pot (i.e. no drainage holes) or similar.

"I'm not metrically minded but in imperial I think thats getting on for a yard!"

That gave me a good chuckle this morning! 90mm would be better, I put that instead of 3.5" because the pots I used were metric - perhaps I'll stick to inches in future before you lot accuse me of being posh for using yard-long pots for my Lettuces!
