    Thanks for those John.
I've just registered with 'Thinkbroadband' and run a couple of tests for comparison. Getting about 2 Mbps on a link that the BT test says is configured for 7 Mbps.
Could in part be due to my antivirus/anti-everything protection which is screwed down pretty tight.
I'll run a test again early one morning as I've found that speed often varies according to the load on the BT server.

I pay for 2Mb but have never got more than .8

I expect that to be the best I can get because I am too far from the telephone exchange to get a higher speed. Even BT tell me it is not worth paying for a higher speed

Linda. So sorry. Just saw your comments on Sky, probably a result of my habit of only looking at the last couple of posts on a thread - sheer laziness.

One of my neighbours has Sky (they are on the same telegraph pole as me) and they get about 6 mbps which is what I was getting with Pipex until Tiscali took over. Now I get 2 or even 1 mbps. Apparently they put a throttle on the connection so they can get more customers on a server.

Sky email is weird though. The neighbours have no web know-how at all and when trying to set it up they lost their password which is different from their log on password, so they phoned Sky. 'We can't give it out over the phone' said the Sky lady. 'We will mail it to your registered address'. Quite right of course in the absence of a security question. But when it arrived the letter said 'Your password is *********'. [IMG]Literally. So they still can't use Sky email. [IMG]

[IMG] [IMG] How infuriating is all this. I am not having problems but as you all probably know i don't come on-line very often - just because i'm paying for it to be 24/7 now, i don't use it [IMG]

I've heard all sorts of horror stories.

With regards to 'lines' i thought even cable rented the phone lines as such-?

I'm sure everyone knows of someone, somewhere that still has trouble getting Channel 5 on TV, this 'digital' takeover is a big con as far as i'm concerned. if the government decide that everyone has to have digital, then they should give away set top boxes. We all know that just cos you have a 'good' tv , PC or whatever doesn't mean you get the best. of course i'm not talking thousands of pounds here, rich people never have to put up with bad signals - or am i wrong? I have 2 digi boxes upstairs, & they both give different info. How does a person with no knowledge at all know if they're getting the best for their area? Espcially the ederly & infirm.

I know someone on the Isle of Wight, you can't even get a mobile signal half the time where she lives!

I saw a thread on here about a new tv giving bad 'pixels'. I was told that new ariels are a waste of time, most of the time.

Flipping heck all, sorry. didn't mean to go on, maybe i should have gone on the rant thread [IMG]

Hope you all get sorted, and let us know so we can do something about the 'nasties'.

    cheers
