I have been retired now for six months
I had sent emails to two work collegues but no reply

Yesterday I replied to an email from an aquaintance who works there
who automatically sends me funnies Almost daily
I explained could she fill me in of what was going on in my old work place

Collegue/Friend one Dave aged 51 went off sick with flu and died Aug 23rd
Collegue/Friend two Ian aged 53 dropped dead at work Aug 25th

I say friends as they were more than collegues, Ian in particular was retiring
at 55 and I had put him onto ex forces accomodations for sale cheap in Spain
as his intention was to take his money and retire to the Sun NEVER HAPPENED

Dave again more than work collegue, but not nights out drinking buddies etc
just a good work friend, we used to do each other good favours

Sad but glad I know where they are and not a life mystery of being ignored :-(

Sorry to hear about your friends, Jack.

Sorry to hear your sad news Jack - sadly, that seems to be the way of things for many nowadays. In the last six weeks, I've had two of my colleagues die, with the eldest being 66; admittedly, one of them had been ill for a while, but that doesn't lessen the impact any.

That's very sad Jack, Three people I knew well at work all died in their first year of retirement in my last year at work, it wasn't a comfortable feeling.

Yes, live for today. Whilst living in Cyprus for 12 years, over that period, we lost 46 friends and aquaintances, the worst was the parents of a lad who was 17 at the time, over the space of 10 days both his parents died, both from cancer.God, it was so sad to see him. Luckily his older siblings took him under their wings.

Sorry to hear this Jack:sad:....I thank my lucky stars that my parents have had a long and reasonably fit retirement....it's so sad to hear of folks slogging their guts out and then ...curtains....they deserve so much more....i'm hearing too many stories like this these days...to the point that i'm trying to keep out of the mindset that folks are lucky to even reach retirement.....so i say ...Go for it ...waste not a second ....be happy:dbgrtmb:...
All alot easier said than done though.....

                  Dear Loli,
keep this mindset always in focus. Your health is more important than a few more quid that comes with promotion and the like. I am not £ rich but I am contented. I am not saving up for gold handles ON MY CoFFIN !!
                  Amen,
                  Jenny

This story reminds me of a colleague I used to work with. He was well liked by everyone but when he retired we never heard anything from him for months which we all thought was strange We just assumed he was getting on with life. Then someone tried to contact him about the office christmas lunch, shockingly we discovered he died within a couple of months of retirement of a heart attack. His widow had rang our HR dept to tell them straight away but they didn't think to tell his ex-colleagues (i.e. us his friends). So none of us work friends went to his funeral or sent cards, very sad, and his widow must have thought we were a selfish lot. But what a poor show from our inhuman HR dept.
