We have a plum or damson tree which has dropped a large branch at the weekend with circa 100 green unripe fruit. I have had to pick the fruit (stalks attached) in order to clear up.

Any ideas on how I can get them to ripen and what they are?

They are oval, about egg-shape and turn red/purple when ripe. The tree is about 15 foot high.

Hello nikkimatt and welcome to GC!

The best way I know to ripen fruit is to wrap it in paper or place in paper bags and keep it in a dry dark place but make sure you check regularly and remove ripened fruit. To speed up the process, place and apple or a banana inside the bag with the other fruit ... don't ask me why!

Are you into jam making? :D :D

I don't know what variety you have. It might be a Victoria plum.

The placing of a banana or peach with other fruit to aid ripening is because they produce a large amout of ethanol as they ripen and ethanol is essential for the ripening of fruit.
Nikimatt I think I answered this for you on the Beeb site.
