Hello, petecarri, welcome to GC. I'm sorry I can't help either as my situation is completely different but I know there are a few on here who can advise you regarding your figs.

    Hello there Petecarri and welcome.
With my fig tree I remove all fruit larger than a pea as these will not ripen and will probably fall off before Spring anyway. The smaller fruit are the ones that will grow and ripen for next summer.
    Good luck.

Welcome Petecarri. Our fig tree is in our Wintergarten, planted in a bed. I have never removed any fruit, just let them grow or fall off as they will. Of course we eat any that mature. I didn't know that Blackthorn - would the smaller ones perhaps grow better if I removed the ones bigger than a pea? Sorry to butt into your question Petecarri. By the way, our fig tree is so big now that we have been chopping it back for the past several years.

This question has come up before I think, some people do and some dont.
I'm a dont bother person, I find the ones that aren't going to make it, dont, and fall off on their own.
The ones that will grow next year and ripen are not really reconisable as fruit at the moment, just a small bump at this stage.
