The Ruinette at College. This one has now been dismantled and a bigger one built in another workshop, but I don't have pics of that one.

          Hi Neville,

          I'm glad you asked.

I work on and teach about conservation of our built heritage. Using traditional materials and techniques combined with the lastest technology to keep the buildings that we have for as long as possible.

Its not good to let students loose on an actual building without training, so the "ruinette" lets us guide them through techniques before going live on real historical material.

Ah riiight ! So basically you've built a shoddy wall inside, then you make the poor students repair it :) Makes sense ...

Presume you have similar "play rigs" for things like roofs then ?

Yep, taking apart, re building, piecing in bits of stone, grouting, pointing, rendering, running plaster moldings & mortar repairs.

There's no roofing course at West Dean but they do a Timber Frame Repair course at the Weald and Downland Museum next door.

The Museum is a huge site where timber framed buildings are re erected.

                Event Description

There's a lot going on there.

They also do courses in all sorts of stuff. I've been on the Ritual Protection Course there, learning about signs & objects put into buildings as protection against bad spirits.

Things like this Child's Shoe from the 1790s

Your students would have fun in our house..looks like it's been purpose built for educating them in various traditional techniques...but we just inherited it like this! After removing bulging wallpaper then knocking off crumbling wet plaster in the kitchen, I've discovered a crack in the wall that goes right through to outside render! I thought I only needed to go on a course to run a mould to repair the cornice work...now I realise I need to go on courses to learn to do lime plastering, grouting, rendering...etc!!

Can you recommend any traditional good luck charm I could wedge in the crack before repair?! This 'crack' is where the new (100 year old) extension was added to the original part of the house.

Anything used and personal to you and the family, objects found are always worn or broken, kitchen utensils, shoes, toys etc.

Might be an idea to put some helifix ties across the gap before covering it up

Just to tie it all in.

I can talk you thru the lime plastering etc.
