Thought I'd start a thread for all the GW members who like myself are migrating across to here. It might reduce what could be dozens of new threads from GW members who might be ooking for each other. I've carried over my GW username.

Maybe we could post here or one of the other new members threads and have a central place for us to find each other, ask questions about any posts and threads we made over on the GW forum, and then start new threads on this forum seeing as all GW content will soon be lost. I know I'll be wanting to track certain GW members down to then have discussions on old topics etc

Thanks to Gardeners Corner for accepting us all :)

I'm confused. Does this mean you will have a discussion area to handle threads previously exclusive to expats from GW?

I apologize in advance for being a bit dense.

Simply just a place for new members from GW to find each other, as they may take on new usernames. All GW content will be erased in a few days and many will no doubt want to find certain other GW members they have corresponded with over the years, they can then start new threads on this forum to continue their discussions once reunited.

Just an idea, please delete if not :)

You're welcome. I enjoyed your content in the 'plants for bees' & 'mason bees' thread (was it called that?) so I'll be looking on the Wildlife section here for further advice.

After replying to your post, I looked at threads on the soon to be defunct GW forum and I was alarmed by the confrontational atmosphere. Something about cliques and domination and condescending behaviour toward newbie questions was the substance of the content. I did copy all of the pages to look at them in fresh daylight to perhaps reassess my perception of the migration.

My feeling is that possibly that is why new members who are expats are using new names? Maybe trying to disassociate from toxic ambience?

                This worried me.

I love this forum and would be upset at the possibility of being pushed aside by more experienced gardeners who are veterans of that forum and cannot tolerate novices and good-hearted casual gardeners.

Just my thickness showing I guess :noidea:

Apologies @CanadianLori my fellow GW refugees are a bit overenthusiastic as this whole closing down thing was foistered on us rather suddenly and I'm sure things will calm down and we will get chatting the GC way soon enough.

Over the 3-4 years I'd been fairly active on GW it has been a great place to exchange ideas about plants and uses for them, the odd upset would happen from time to time but nothing particularly awful.

So hope all the new influx of people will add value to this forum and exchange tips and ideas.

I'm in the process of moving out of London to North Wales so will ask lots of questions come May

Thanks for the welcome to so many of us today and looking forward to getting used to the interface and read lots of the existing contributions on here.

A bit of a test post for me to see if I can still use the username many from GW might recognise and probably to make some silly starter mistakes on a new forum.

First, I'd like to say a big thank you to Gardeners Corner for offering a liferaft to those of us from GW who feel like we've been cast adrift with minimal (7days) notice of closure. Many of us had been posting daily (multiple times per day) for many years and had built up very real friendships - both online and in real life. I hope the groups I've been involved with have always been very inclusive and not cliquey.

We're all feeling a tad bemused and confused by what's happened, and more than a little worried we were about to be completely cut off from friends who have provided both good horticultural advice and emotional support through difficult times over the years.

I would like to see us slowly amalgamate and make valuable contributions within the whole GC forum - just as we did on GW. This is definitely not intended to be an attempt for GW people to attempt to hijack GC - that would be extremely rude and unnecessary.

However, just for the next few weeks I'd rather like to have some familiar names around me while I find my way around this forum so forgive me if I gravitate towards those people I know. I promise to do better when I've found my feet!

THANK YOU GC for having us!

An option for continuing threads from GW might be to post, even in point form, a synopsis of the thread so that members here can enthusiastically join in rather than joining the conversation long after the initial post.

We do have a private messaging facility to accommodate historic discussions not previously privy to current members if it is too arduous a task for introducing a new topic as is done in most new posts?

Hi @CanadianLori ! We're all feeling a bit lost, having suddenly discovered the GW forum was closing without warning. No way do we want to muscle in on the way you do things here in GC - but we need time to find our feet, and find friends from the old forum as well as making new ones here.

The reason for some people having to take new user names on GC is that their GW names have already been taken by users here. No skulduggery, honest!

There were very few "upsets" on the GW forum, just one or two troublemakers most of whom were booted out. I'm sure there's excellent moderation on this site!

Thanks from me too, for the acceptance and welcome here.

For a while it all seemed a bit overwhelming, I suppose its to be expected when we suddenly get lots of new members, who all know one another, join, that doesn't often happen, mostly one or two new members at a time.
I hope you all get into GC and enjoy the forums.

To be given only seven days notice of closure is poor form by anyone's standards, so folks are bound to feel upset. I am sure everyone joining the GC family will naturally find each other before long and have the added bonus of also having the company of everyone else.

As @pete and @CanadianLori have alluded to, we are quite relaxed around here and don't do cliques etc - I am sure, however, that if anything like that was the case over at GW, it will be left behind back at GW... ;)
