growing asparagus????

    can you grow asparagus from cuttings of what you buy at greengrocers????????? i have a little patch i fancy growing some in. although you are supposed to leave it until its 3rd year before harvesting some!!!!
    HELP !

    I rather doubt it Steve. I've never heard of anyone growing it from cuttings - though that's not to say it's not been done.
    The "normal" way is to grow it from seed which does mean three years to the first proper harvest or else buy young plants.
    Our first asparagus bed was grown from seed and turned out to be a great producer. But the next time I made an asparagus bed I bought young plants from B&Q and its been very unproductive in comparison .

    we used to get funny spidery bulb things ( that is when the birds did not self seed the stuff)

    You have to dig a trench, with a hump, stick the things on the hump and let the sides dangel in sand in the trencher either side.

    Its not really difficult, but likes poor sandy conditions. buy good stock form a nursery and get it in right conditions.

    and remember good butter and salt - yummy yummy!!!!
