Some years ago back in the 1970's I used to watch a tv program called "Out of town",
mostly for the fishing content, but we also got some nice tales about the countryside. This particular episode shows an unusual method of growing Sweet Peas, I've not tried it, has anyone else? I might try it next year.

        @burnie
I watched that the other day.
I have seen them grown like that at a number of places including RHS Wisley.
Done it myself, by accident, when things have fallen over.
Usually done in rows rather than circle. drop to the ground weave along the base of the canes and then tie the tip in.
Often done when growing show quality blooms, when the tendrils are also removed and the number of blooms restricted.
The main thing for lots of blooms is water.

Not seen the video but going by Nigel's description its the old layering technique.
@JWK does similar with his tomatoes.

Just seen some of the video, I'd forgotten how posh Jack Hargreaves sounds for a country bumpkin.

He was a good story teller, he tells of being raised on a farm, but was actually a city boy from London, but the first person approach sort of took you on a journey. He often made mistakes when naming things, so you don't use him for reference, but I still love watching them, times were definitely better back then, technology hasn't really made the world a better place.

As @pete says I layer my tomato plants in a similar way but it's a much faster process using purpose made hangars. I had to lower three times during this current season.

I wouldn't have the patience to do that with sweet peas, snipping off the tendrils and using ties instead then making sure they don't wind round the poles would take too long. The tomato hangar system would be much faster. My sweet peas never even got to the top of the 6ft poles this year anyway. Maybe they had taller varieties in the old days.

That theme tune and the horse crossing the bridge took me straight back to the 60s, I used to watch Out of Town occasionally but never missed the follow on, How, with Fred Dinenage, I seem to recall Fred took the mickey out of old Jack Hargreaves in a gentle way.

I associate "Out of Town" with the mid to late 70's and the particular episode above fro the early 80's.
                    Never really got into "How",

As I remember it How was a children's show from the 60s may well have run into the 70s but by then I wouldn't have been watching.
Out of town with Jack Hargreaves was probably around the same period but was aimed at adults mostly.

The first theme tune was sung by Max Bygraves when it started.
