Sheal suggested I put some of these wind-borne trees and a shrub on here. All of them came from seed and got going in the last year. I'd appreciate any help you can give in putting a name to them.

This has got thick, serrated, leathery, alternate leaves and upward-pointing branches.

    2) This is the shrub:

This is like a wild rose with similar small, thin serrated leaves and multiple growths from the ground,
    [IMG]
but its got no thorns. Reddish new growth.

There's a birch too, number three.

    4) This one has unserrated, light green leaves and new upward-pointing red stems.

It's shooting up like there's no tomorrow.

Five is a weed I'm pretty sure.

    6) Here's anther one the birds bought.

But its main trunk is weak, not very woody. It shot up and now seems to have stalled.

    7) Another one.

It's got thick leaves, partially serrated and reddish new stems. The leaves just in the centre of the tree are partially yellow.

It's like number four except half the leaf is serrated.

    Any clues?

Hi, I think all the photos except no.6; which is an Elder (Sambucus nigra) are Pussy/Goat Willows (Salix caprea), they self seed freely and pop up all over the place. Grown correctly they can make attractive shrubby trees, especially in the spring when they're covered in catkins; they can be pruned back hard in late winter/early spring every 2-3 years if you want to contain their size..:dbgrtmb:

Thank you very much for that.

Quite the opposite, I'd plant leylandii if only they weren't conifers!

Pussy Willow. They're sort of ornamental things, aren't they? You say 'grown correctly' - what would that be: supporting the central trunk and pruning lower growth? I've had a look again and it's crazy how the leaves look so different: some serrated and thick, some with smooth edges even on the same tree, some lighter underneath. However, they do all feel the same: like a piece of leather.

      And Elder sounds interesting
