A grand IS quite a lot lol. A Play:5 is room filling sound. It's massive sound performance and has several speakers to provide a stereo sound. It is however, better with separate speakers which is why they have a range of sizes. Plop in a Sonos One or two and the sound bounces in a very pleasing way. Personally, a play:5 is more than enough for me in any room. The play:3 is actually enough for most rooms, they really are good at what they do. My music is all hosted on a NAS drive but the apps that work with the system are extensive so most people I know now are just subscribing to a streaming service and have all music at any time. Ain't life grand.
That said, I'd still shop about should I ever need to replace - sonos cornered the market and other were really slow to catch up but there's some utterly wonderful bits of wireless kit out there now :)
