Ziggy, I'm getting grand visions of building my own folly using flints and home made lime mortar... :rolleyespink:

Is it really practical to make lime mortar (or putty I guess) by burning chalk?

I've got several old pallets and lots of scrap wood - could I chuck it all together and hope for the best or would I have to rig up a kiln and try a controlled burn?

    All comments gratefully received :dbgrtmb:

    Blimey, there was a thread title I couldn't ignore:sunny:

You could make a stack of pallets & layers of chalk, you need to get it to about 900c to drive the CO2 off.

You need to be able to contain it, a pit was traditionally dug in the side of a chalk hill, fire built in the bottom & fuel & chalk added from above.

The resulting lump lime, calcium oxide, is extremly reactive, when water is poured on it, it will boil in 3 seconds, with an extremly violent explosive gloppingness.

This is done in a lime pit, dug into the ground or built above ground, you need to contain it while its turning into calcium hydroxide.

Very hot, needs stirring & takes 3 months to slake properly.

Thats your basic lime putty, you mix that 3 to 1 with aggregate & thats your lime mortar.

Anything after that then "Follys & Ruins R Us"

I could make you something brand new that looks a thousand years old, every garden should have a "Ruin" :dbgrtmb:

Thanks for the reply Ziggy. I can't see me being able to do that, I haven't enough wood to get up to that temperature and if I had it would be one hell of a fire - too big for my little garden I guess.

I haven't really got any plans what my folly would look like, but I've got a couple of tons of flint that would make some nice rustic walls.
