seems to depend on how high you drop it from.

I have given up on ordinary batteries, they just don`t seem to last long, I am nearly all re-chargeable now. As they fade I replace with them.

Good tip kindred, I just tested my car battery that way, it broke a couple of paving slabs but didn't bounce so it must be OK :)

Arn't there certain things that rechargeables are not suitable for?

NiCad & NiMH rechargeable batteries used in bicycle lights and head torches in freezing weather will die a lot quicker and the charge will go suddenly, leaving you on the roads/hills without any lights.

I have the same mains linked, the re-chargeable batteries are built in so they are not replaceable.

They are supposed to last 10 years but I had one fail last winter (after approx 3 years). It started bleeping randomly, so the manufacturer (Kidde) sent me a replacement alarm for free. They also advised that they need testing once a month, which we do now, it makes the battery cycle the discharge/charge.
