I see the "sick man" of Europe is acting up yet again.

Back in the 70s when the unions ruled the UK I seem to remember the french (small f,), calling Britain "the sick man of europe", (small e).

But for years now the french have done nothing but block the channel ports and the hole in the ground, (tunnel).

Its about time the so called EU clamped down on them, they are blocking free trade, which, apart from allowing every tom dick or harry to come and live here, was a big part of the EU strategy.

So aint it about time they got fined millions of those, Euro thingies, every time they allow the unions over there to block free trade.

Then maybe we could have our M20 back from those thousands of lorries, mostly from the EU, that like to park there every once in a while, when the french throw a tantrum.

I never understood why we let 'em have it back after we liberated them :heehee:

Can't do that - it would infringe upon their human rights!

Its not so long ago that the Mayor of Calais threatened to close the port if we didn't sort out the illegal immigrant problem for them.

Its been closed now for a few days.

If only they would close it permanently, divert all the traffic to a port that actually wants the business, and put two fingers up to Calais, then maybe things could be sorted out.

Until the French stop letting strikers rule their country this kind of stupidity will continue.

I kinda agree with Pete. I've been in the union since I started work, pretty much, and am a great believer in workers rights. However, it seems to me that the workers at Calais go on strike on a regular basis, knowing full well the disruption it's going to cause over here. As an aside, I still don't understand why the French blame us for the immigrant thing in Calais. I mean, do they seriously think we should change our social policy to suit them? And, how come we paid millions to install a fence?

I've never been in a union, never been one that actually sticks up for people doing my kind of job, but I'm not anti union, I tend to think sometimes we could do with a bit more of it over here, but not as it was, or how it seems to be in France.

The cops over there just let them get on with it, even lighting bonfires on the channel tunnel tracks.
Its mob rule, with their government doing absolutely nothing to sort it out.

At one time, I must admit, I had some sympathy for them regarding the immigrant thing, us being a the no1 world magnet for anyone looking for a "better life", but it has waned now.

The French need to get their act in gear, sort themselves out, and start acting like they are part of the EU, instead of the EU being part of them.

Oh Pete this really hits my buttons! :wallbanging: Prehaps if we changed our policies on giving people outside the UK benifits when they had never paid in or stopped giving out houses to non uk residents or stopped educating non UK residents in our schools & stopped giving free NHS, it wouldn't be so appealing! I'm really NOT racist but there has to be a limit on what we keep giving. I can totally see it from the immigrants point of view & I do feel sorry for them BUT we can't keep giving to all & sundry, there's not enough money on the pot for us let alone more people coming in! Yes if they want to work & pay in of course after a certain amount of time they should get something but not before!
I deal with some Eastern Europeans in association with one of my businesses & I have to say they are delightful, I don't have any problems & they all work blinking hard, it's not all of them it's those who ruin it for others who pip me off!
The chaos at Calais is just ridiculous, someone needs to be a blooming grip!

Filling in the Euro Tunnel will go a long way to returning our sovereignty and border problems. Digging out the English Channel making it deeper and wider might help. I actually like and admire the French but their politicians need to stop blaming us and know the problem will never go away until they take care of their own borders.....the same applies to our "Government":dunno::heehee:
