    My guess is Escallonia.

Not sure when to prune, but, when you do, please may I have some of your prunings? I love escallonia

I'm not sure it is Escallonia, the flowers don't usually open up as much as this. Crush the leaves Jiffy and if they have a citrus smell, then yes it's Escallonia. You can prune any time of year. :)

I have sixty feet of hedging to look after, this one is shared with my neighbour.

After Sheal mentioned the citrus smell of crushed leaves on another thread, I went round a garden with several different Escallonia, crushing and smelling.
I couldn't smell any citrus either!

By the way Escallonia can come with Red or pink or White flowers.
There are now many named cultivars sold as well as species.
A favourite of mine is Escallonia Iveyi a white flowered one.

Maybe it is just Escallonia macrantha that has scented crushed leaves. I have no idea?
            See.

I'm surprised at that, when I've trimmed my hedges they smell quite strongly.
