Is it just me or do all politicians at all levels thing the general public are complete idiots? And is there even one among them that has a spine?

Watching the news tonight, it seems the latest development in the expenses scandal is there have been a few resignations.

How I would love to find a job that pays me about £150,000 per year basic salary then the same again in expenses, and pays for me to buy and furnish a house. How I would love it even more if I had the financial security from my past earnings in such a job to be able to afford to say 'Ok, I quit' as soon as someone starts scrutinising my actions.

Even when this expenses debacle is history, how can we possibly be expected to trust politicians that, unlike most ordinary folks, have no financial or legal imperative to do the right thing. If I find myself under pressure in my job and want to bail out, I must first find another job, and leave on such terms that I'd get a decent reference. If I was to just turn to my boss and say 'I quit', it would be pretty much career suicide as I'd need a decent reference from my boss for my next job. It would also knock my family for six because I'd have pretty much nothing to live on until I found another job. It seems politicians don't have to deal with these real life issues, and can just throw in the towel and hide in shame rather than facing up to the consequences of their actions.

Anyway. That's my rant over for now.

Yes, they do think we're idiots. But they've suddenly realised the game is up, the population is livid and there are elections forthcoming. Remember The Two Ronnies sketch, "The Worm that Turned"?

What infuriates me is that Jacqui Smith had her fingers in the till on a grand scheme, is b***** useless as Home Secretary and is STILL in her job.

As far as rants go, thats a good one, and Im sure the sentiment is shared by several of our friends on this forum. I do not usually comment on political or religious issues on forums, but this is by its nature a very emotive subject at the moment and quite rightly so.

Whatever happens, I don't think a general election is a good idea at the moment. With the mood of the country, protest voting could well lead to extremist politics getting into power and anything is better than that happening. But the whole system needs a good overhaul. A friend of mine may well end up working for a German MP in the German Bundesrat and there, MPs get a monthly allowance for expenses and their staff are paid directly by the Parliament. None of this "employing your wife as secretary" milarkey.

Extremists are already in power. The current lot have invaded two countries that posed no threat to us, pushed for the right to lock people up without trial, pushed for the right to hold trials in private using selected government/police/military personnel for the jury. They are pushing for us all to have our DNA stored in a database that we would have to pay for, they are are trying to get us all to carry mandatory ID cards, with it being an offence not to carry it, they have started to monitor our phone calls and internet activity, passed a law that alienates our youth (we must all have seen the odd notices up at bus stops and the likes saying that the police have the right to move groups of one or more youths), and lately there have been a couple of instances of people being denied the right to peaceful protest so it is getting towards that we can't even publicly object to the government's fascist actions. And as for justice in this country lately, what is 'justice'? On one hand we here that benefit fraudsters will go to jail, and on the other hand we hear that the very people that make these decisions are stealing from each and every one of us and they're doing nothing wrong.

new labour will get a bloody nose come the general election
the tories will profit (pardon the pun) though they are just as embroiled in the expenses scandal
    what a great choice eh
failed flawed labour or the forever sleazey tories
forget the dreamy lib dems or anyone else realistically getting a look in (great shame really)
what are the police going to do about all of these fraudulent expense claims?
