Is there any chance my rhubarb will survive?

I was very lucky to be given a nice bit of rhubarb early this year. I planted it in a nice open spot with plenty sunlight etc and it had been growing beautifully....

Last night I got home to find a my well meaning mother in law had made a nice rhubarb flan, you can guess where she got the rhubarb :( There is now just a patch of soil where my plant was not a single stalk is left, needless to say I am gutted.

I know it's not meant to be harvested in the first year so I am just going to ask the question, Is there any chance my rhubarb can survive this?

It is most unlikely that the root will be killed. In fact if you scrape the soil away you will probably see the buds of some emerging stems. Of course, strict instructions - no more Rhubarb flans this year

Oh dear. All you can do is give it a bit of TLC and wait and see. I guess if it's a big, vigorous crown in a good position, it could recover from such a brutal assault. Or maybe not. But either way, it's set you back another year before you can harvest rhubarb properly.

 

My new rhubarb crowns were ravaged by a flock of ewes, they ate every stalk about a month ago but now it's fighting back. I'm sure your's will be OK.

I am pleased to report that there is a new shoot in the patch of soil where my rhubarb was. Hopefully it's a sign that it will survive.

My mother in law has also bought me a new rhubarb plant which I have planted near (but not too near) where the old one was. So hopefully in the next couple of years I should have a good size rhubarb patch.
